SFGMC - USS Metaphor: "We Sail the Ocean Blue"
SFGMC - USS Metaphor: "We Sail the Ocean Blue"
In May of 2007, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus debuted "USS Metaphor," their adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan's "HMS Pinafore" and a skewering take on the US military's discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Encore presentations took place in February and July of 2008. As this ship of gay sailors prepares to dock in Boston Harbor, Stephen Closeted is conflicted over his feelings for fellow shipmate Ralph Rackstraw. His father, Captain Closeted, eagerly awaits a visit from presidential candidate Secretary Josephine Porter. Mister Buttercup, the ship's vendor, and Aunt Shebe, a member of Josephine's entourage, stand back and watch the hilarity ensue as it quickly becomes apparent that Stephen and Ralph aren't the only members of the crew with a secret to hide... AMAZING ORANGE COAST COLLEGE SCHOOL OF SAILING !
www.orangecoastcollege.edu Dr. Laura Schlessinger Donates $2.3 Million Yacht To OCC's School Of Sailing And Seamanship. Author and radio talk show host, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, has given Orange Coast Colleges School of Sailing and Seamanship a beautiful $2.3 million yacht. "Dr. Laura" purchased the 58-foot sailboat in 2004, and has been keeping it in Santa Barbara. Shes a Santa Barbara resident. The boat arrived this week (Feb. 26) at OCCs Sailing Center in Newport Beach. Dr. Laura called the boat On the Air, but the college has changed the name to Bluefin. Orange Coast College will use the boat for its offshore sailing program, and students will begin taking classes on the boat this summer. Bluefin is the third major donation to OCCs School of Sailing and Seamanship in less than two years. Roy E. Disney donated his record-breaking 86-foot yacht, Pyewacket, in the summer of 2005, and Southern California yachtsman, John B. Kilroy, gave his 80-foot maxi yacht, Kialoa III, to the college three months earlier. Now 52 years old, and the largest public sailing program in the United States, OCCs School of Sailing and Seamanship provides nautical education to more than 4000 student and adult sailors annually. At Orange Coast College, there are as many places to give, as there are Ways of Giving. You can tailor your gift to reflect your interest in a campaign or project. You can support the school or college of your choice or make an unrestricted gift to be used at the discretion ...

Salem Sound to National Ocean Policy.mp4
Rob Moir is outstanding by Winter Island Lighthouse talking about naming Salem Sound and saving ocean ecosystems. Starting locally in one harbor, to one embayment (the Sound) to state to nation. Thanks to the efforts of many including Nathaniel Bowditch (America's Practical Navigator), Leon Panetta, Governor Deval Patrick and many politicians and citizens we are drop by drop, harbor by harbor, saving the oceans. Lawn owners can save seas by using at least 50% slow release nitrogen, respect setbacks from waterways and by taking a lawn care vacation during the rainy weeks when algal green slime is most starved for nutrients. Vampire Cruise Ship Sets Sail
Vampire Cruise Ship Sets Sail
Vampire Cruise Ship Sets Sail The cruise ship industry is making splashes with its themed Alaska cruises. Two this summer were aimed at conservative policy makers and tea partyers. But political wonks aren't the only targeted consumer market that Alaska's wonders appeals to. Prepare for a blood-sucking party at sea next summer. Holland America, one of the major cruise operators in Alaska, has announced a vampire-themed cruise up the state's Inside Passage, according to Vamps at Sea, a website touting the event. Promotions for the party tout vampire scholars, a vampire movie festival and even a descendant of Bram Stoker, Darce Stoker, who's also gotten into the undead business of late, co-authoring a sequel to his great-granduncle's classic, "Dracula." No word on whether Holland America could snag any descendents of Bela Lugosi or any of the cast from the "Twilight" movies, the sparkly vampires that have done so well at world box offices over the last few years. Vamps at Sea will set sail from Vancouver, BC on June 23, 2012 and cruise the Inside Passage for a week, with ports of call in Ketchikan, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Juneau.

EU Blue Belt - Dimitrios Theologitis, Maritime Transport and Ports Policy
Dimitrios Theologitis Head of Unit "Maritime Transport and Ports Policy; Maritime Security" Maritime Transport, Galileo and Intelligent Transport Directorate Directorate General for Energy and Transport European Commission An extremely interesting insight provided by Mr. Theologitis relating to the European Maritime Transport Space without Barriers initiative, commonly known as Blue Belt which is a regional plan for ships trading between European Union member states. Under Blue Belt, vessels sailing between two European Union Ports and carrying European Union cargoes certain facilitations will be applied to ease the process of the vessels entering and leaving ports. This will be coupled with a Blue Lane concept whereby vessels will go into an area where customs and other normal checks will be dispensed with other than spot checks which is a standard practice everywhere. In conjunction with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) a pilot project will be carried out during 2011 with full facilitation during 2015 to allow time for uniform standards and systems to be put in place in order for this to be achieved. One aspect on board related to this will be the provision of broadband communications in order to transmit and receive the data exchanges that will be needed to enable this to work. The US Health Care System 'In Irons' — in Which Direction Will It Emerge?
The US Health Care System 'In Irons' — in Which Direction Will It Emerge?
September 25, 2007 Speaker: Stuart N. Altman, Ph.D., Dean, The Heller School for Social Policy and Management and Sol C. Chaikin Professor of National Health Policy, Brandeis University Presented by: the Law-Medicine Center Summary: Oliver C. Schroeder, Jr. Scholar-in-Residence Lecture In sailing, there is a term, "In Irons" that describes a boat caught between winds pushing in opposite directions. The sails are flapping wildly but the boat is not going in either direction. This term could be used to describe the current US health care system. The cost of private and public health insurance has been growing at or near double digit rates; the number of uninsured continues to creep upwards; and persistent quality of care problems plague the system. Is the US health care system directionless? How did we get into this situation? Is there something we could do to get the health care system moving in a different direction? If we are not skillful at controlling our own destiny, which direction are we likely to head? Do we know in what direction we would like to go? Stuart Altman is an economist whose primary research interests are federal and state health policy. He has an MA and Ph.D. degree in Economics from UCLA and has taught at Brown University and the Graduate School of Public Policy at University of California, Berkeley.
